After my abstract painting phase, I began the Women Shopping Series. It was 1987 in San Francisco and everyone was shopping. Women's legs in high heels were striding with determination. My first paintings looked like Samurai warriors. I painted some 25 oil on canvas Women Shopping images. I also created many small pastel studies.

I began my Women Shopping Drawings after I discovered oil stick bars. They feel like you are drawing with lipstick. I drew panel after panel of rich, black oil stick figures on paper. This is an additive drawing method. There is no erasing. If you go too far on a drawing, it is ruined and must be tossed. The single panels soon evolved into diptychs and triptychs. These shoppers were looking for something, but would their search for objects fulfill their emotional needs?
